The natural environment cannot be “planned”.

I wrote about hubris the other day. And today I read about California bemoaning the fact that they didn’t budget enough for disaster protection.
How many times have you heard that sorry cry?
Oh no, we can’t stop doing the things that create an environment that will lead to massive disruptions in the future.
Oh no, we can’t stop building on coastal highways where storm surges will wipe out your house. Or carve out housing communities in the middle of dry canyons and remove all the natural vegetation that helps keep the soil in place.
Oh hell no, that would be too easy.
Just keep destroying things and then throw billions upon billions of dollars at the resulting calamity.
And these are the people who are supposed to be taking care of business.
Nature cannot be planned. It has its own agenda and it doesn’t include us.
Apparently, humans aren’t smart enough to get the picture.
