Last Updated on June 1, 2024 by Daniel

Today I’d like to discuss the importance of Mobility Aids for Seniors. It is quite common to find yourself in need of help for limited mobility because of an injury or other longer term condition. Having the right equipment that helps you move around easier is essential.  You may need a cane, crutches, a scooter wheelchair or maybe a walker. Whatever the need there are many excellent devices on the market that can help you.

These devices are designed to improve balance, increase stability, and assist with general leg weakness. – Mobility walking aids can enhance safety and independence by helping prevent falls and allowing users to be mobile without the assistance of a caregiver or loved one.

Mobility Aids  – Mobility aids can enhance safety and independence by helping prevent falls and allowing users to be mobile without the assistance of a caregiver or loved one.

1. What is a mobility aid

Another name for a mobility aid is ambulatory assistance devices.  These include any device that makes getting around much easier. They may include regular walking sticks, form pillows for wheelchairs, stair climbing aids, and even mattresses for reducing bedsores.

Canes are the simplest aids for ambulation. They augment balance and provide sensory feedback from the walking surface.

Basically anything that helps you live better and be mobile is a mobility device.

2. How do you know if you need a mobility aide

Other than the obvious reasons, such as the need for crutches after a fracture or ankle injury If you experience two or more falls within a short period of time (e.g. three to six months), or if you have a fall that causes serious injury due to disability or age, it may be time to consider basic mobility devices.

Some examples of disabilities and conditions that can have an impact on mobility, fatigue and pain levels are :

  • Back and neck problems.
  • Accidents or injury leading to long term disability.
  • Arthritis and any other condition affecting the joints.
  • Amputation.
  • Fibromyalgia.
  • Multiple sclerosis.
  • Partial or total paralysis.

3. How do you help someone with mobility problems?

Here are some modifications you could suggest that family makes to the home for the patient:

  1. Installing grab bars in the bathrooms.
  2. Rearranging furniture to provide a safer and/or more direct path.
  3. Removing or pinning down rugs.
  4. Removing clutter from floors to avoid tripping and falling.

4. Would I benefit from a mobility aid

These devices provide several benefits to users, including more independence, reduced pain, and increased confidence and self-esteem. A range of mobility devices is available to meet people’s needs – from canes and crutches to wheelchairs and stair lifts.

5. What equipment helps with mobility?

If you have issues with your balance or with your mobility, you may benefit from the use of assistive devices or equipment. Equipment such as a motorized lift chair, an electric scooter, or a rollator may keep you safe in the home or when you’re out and about.

6. How Do I choose a Mobility Aid

If you only have minor problems standing/walking, then a cane might be best for you. If walking/standing is a greater issue, then walkers, rollators, or wheelchairs may be the right choice.

Choosing the right mobility aid will depend on your loved one’s specific difficulties and needs. The simplest and best way to do this is to speak with your loved one. No one will have a better sense of their mobility difficulties and which mobility aids they’ll feel most comfortable using.

7. Where do I find the best mobility solutions?

Other than your medical advisor, or physical therapist, many online resources exist that can lead you to the best solution for your individual circumstances. Mobility solutions exist for wheel chairs, mobility lifts, scooters, canes and walkers.
